I replaced your picture today,
My Friend,
A culling from the shelf,
Amputating you from amongst
The mementos and dusty bric-a-brac.
I couldn’t take it any longer,
My Friend,
Your smile in my line of sight,
Taunting me daily with a
Whiff of salt air and thirty years of whispered echoes.
I replaced your picture today,
My Friend,
Cleaving you from the now,
Almost two years gone by
Relegated to your periphery.
I couldn’t take it any longer.
My Friend.
I replaced your picture today.

Yeah. I totally get this. I am struggling right now thinking I need to do this very thing…. but… I don’t really want to.

Think of it as a New Year cleanse, but only do it if you’re ready. It’s a very symbolic move of letting go, or realizing something has drastically changed. That person is still my friend, like all friends you make family for better or worse, but our relationship is in a very low tide at the moment. I put up a very recent, beautiful picture of me and my sister instead. I chose to fill the space with the present rather than the past.

You’ve skillfully nailed a topic that always depresses me. I hate an era of friendship ending, be an ex or and exfriend. Acknowledging the loss always feels like –as you said–an amputation.

It is a violent sadness. All relationships must evolve. I’m hoping in this case this proves to be merely a valley in a friendship almost as long as my life but there’s no way to know.

I think I’m being pulled off a shelf right now, but I can’t bring myself to rekindle the relationship. We’ve grown so far apart. Makes me feel like a failure.

Most relationships aren’t meant to last the span of a lifetime. However, there’s no real way to know if it’s too late unless you try.

Love it…and love your extremely creative blog title! Single people unite….or, actually, don’t.

Same as introverts, “Introverts Unite! Separately, in your own houses!”.

Thanks so much for reading! I don’t know about brave, it’s just part of trying to live in the present more, to let go.
